Reckless Release!

Reckless comes out in 4 days!!!

If you haven't read the Thoughtless series by S.C. Stephens, you are seriously missing out.  Thoughtless was probably the most intense, emotionally draining book I've ever read.  I actually think I hated it for a bit because I was so exhausted.  But it is amazing.  It's one of those books you start and just can't stop.  It's like watching a train wreck and then seeing them put everything back together again.  It leaves you bare, the second book, Effortless is just as good.  Stephens has released the first two chapter of Reckless as teasers and I have been dying to see more.

Never Too Far by Abbi Glines!!!

Never Too Far
(If you haven't read the first book in this series, Fallen Too Far, don't read this post)

Oh Thank God, Never Too Far has finally been released!   Fallen Too Far was amazing and left me completely on edge.  I have been counting down the days until I could get my hands on this book and find out what the hell Abbi was going to put us through next.  I devoured this book.  It was a "Shh, don't talk...Mommy's reading" type of night.

It was amazing.  Completely worth the wait, and totally hot.

Fallen Too Far ended, leaving me thinking "wait, what?" and luckily the second book picks right up (well, three weeks later) where the first one ended.  And seriously, not even a couple pages in, a bomb is dropped...and I literally found myself saying "Oh, shit!" as I read the first chapter.  This bomb is life-altering and is the center of the entire book.

It doesn't take long for Blaire to return back to Rosemary and her old life, minus Rush.  She visits Rush and finds he has not moved on whatsoever and fully intends to get her back, in any way possible.  She honestly thought he would just move on, did she forget how crazy in love he was?  But having known the old Rush, I guess I could understand that seed of doubt taking root.

"Blaire, nothing has changed.  Not for me.  You don't need my permission.  This is exactly what I want.  Having you here again.  Seeing your face.  God, baby, I can't do this.  I can't pretend I'm not fucking thrilled you're standing in my house right now."

This book is like an emotional roller-coaster on crack.  I was happy, sad, frustrated, disappointed, elated and then the cycle would repeat itself.  Blaire and Rush each have their share of mistakes, misunderstanding and road blocks that try and tear them apart.

"I know now that this is where I'm suppose to be.  No more lies.  Just us.

Never Too Far has the one thing the always gets me in books - a redeemable male character.  I have no idea why this type of character pulls me so much.  Maybe its the transition from dickhead to hero I love.  I have no idea considering my solemate is the exact opposite of dickhead, but Rush is a perfect example of this.  In the first book, he is the epitome of a I-don't-give-a-fuck male, and seeing him become so completely dedicated and devoted to one person is an amazing journey.

"No man has ever loved a woman as much as I love you."

The only thing I hated about this book is that it ended.  I didn't want to leave Blaire and Rush quite yet.  The ending was abrupt, but so sweet and perfect.  But I still didn't want it to end.  I did hear some very exciting news today however.  Abbi is going to write a third book about Blaire and Rush!  She's hoping it will be out sometime this summer.  AND, she is going to write a bonus chapter connecting Never Too Far to the next book.  She also plans on writing a book about Grant.  Lots of opportunities for fanatics like me to continue to ignore real life and live in the "Too Far" world.

Over The Edge by Suzanne Carroll

Whenever I read a book by an author I'm not familiar with, I always google them or look up their Goodreads page.  I like to know what other books they've published, if the book I have my eye on is the beginning of a series and what kind of reviews are out there.  When I found Suzanne Carroll on Goodreads, , I was dying to know if she had anything else I could get my hands on.  I quickly found out that Over The Edge is her debut novel.  I was blown away.  This book is damn good and feels like its been written by a seasoned pro.

This book immediately draws you in as you find Zoe Harper in the middle of a full blown panic attack in the ladies room at her workplace.  She's realizing, or has been realizing for months that her wedding has turned into a full-blown circus.  Her crazy bitch mother-to-be has taken over and she can't seem to stop it all from happening.  She calls her fiance, Dan, for comfort and you quickly discover he's kind of a douche, not to mention a total Mama's boy.  Soon, Zoe comes to realization that she is basically engaged to Dan and his mother and dumps both their asses to start a new life.

Zoe works for Creed Construction.  The CEO, Angus Creed, is a self-made billionaire who turned his father's small construction company into global empire.  Everyone fears him.  He is known for being a hard ass in the boardroom and a player in the tabloids.  His failed engagement a few years back was all over the news and he's become a bit of a recluse ever since.

After a chance encounter one weekend, Zoe offer Angus dancing lessons for an upcoming charity function he must attend.  What starts out as a friendly gesture to the boss, turns into something more and the two find themselves feeling a very strong connection that surpasses their working relationship.

I love books that are written in first person.  Its like giving you a first class ticket into the characters brain.  There is a certain writing style I love.  I guess you would call it witty humor.

"My plan is to get in and out before he knows I'm here, so I tiptoe across the carpet.  I am the Secretary of Stealth."

Zoe's inner monologues are hilarious   She's not over the top funny, but just enough to make you laugh out loud in certain situations.  Also, this book is set in Australia, which makes the writing style slightly different.  Reading Australian phrases and slang made the book ever better.

The build-up in this book is slow, and concise ..but it still gives you goosebumps.  Considering Zoe has just broken off an engagement, she is reluctant to move past friendship, especially with her CEO.  The only downside I found about this book was its quick ending.  I felt so happy and elated in the last few pages, and I then turn the page and realize its over.  It just felt very abrupt.  An epilogue would have wrapped it up a little more neatly.  Also, this book is tame, and would be perfect for someone who likes romance, but doesn't necessarily want anything too steamy.

This book was given to me by the publisher as an advanced readers copy.  So, unfortunately  you will have to wait until its publication date of May 9th to download this book to your e-reader.  Don't miss out on this fantastic love story from down under!  ;-)

A Dream to Cling To by Sally Goldenbaum

A Dream to Cling To: A Loveswept Classic Romance
I started this book Thursday night, and finished it early Sunday morning.  In between then, I had my birthday, birthday party, and post-birthday recovery.  Basically, I didn't read much...but I still managed to finish this book relatively quickly.  The reason - its really short.  It's not novella short, but close - around 150 pages.  Even though it wasn't my favorite book, there were certain parts I found funny and unique.

A Dream to Cling To revolves around Rebecca, a pet lover from a very wealthy family, and Sam, a Renaissance type who has been all over the world and has no plans on putting down roots.  Rebecca does everything in her power to do the exact opposite of what is expected of an heiress.   She lives modestly and helps run a non-profit program that brings animal companions to the elderly.  Rebecca adores her family, especially her father who is about to retire from his very successful career.  Sam has lived all over the world and had many professions in his 35 years.  He loves to travel and believes marriage is like a chain holding him to one spot.  Currently, Sam is the owner of a gaming company that provides personalized games for clients.  In order to achieve his very unique product, he must collect a ton of information about the person the game will center around.  Reluctantly, Rebecca agrees to be the family-appointed representative to provide him with all the information he needs.

I liked this book, but I wasn't crazy over it.  It was a nice story, but felt very rushed.  There were some points of the plot I had a hard time following or catching up to and had a few moments when I was like "wait, when did they say that?"  I did however, really enjoy Sam.  He was very different from most male literary figures.  I could picture him speaking with a British accent (even though he was American) and writing sonnets.  Have you ever seen the show "Elementary"?  Sam reminds me of Sherlock in that show, minus the crazy.  He seemed to know something about everything and had a knack for seeing the unseen in certain situations.  He was my favorite character and I felt he was the most developed.

I hate giving ratings to books because I feel something an author puts their blood, sweat and tears into shouldn't be reduced to a number, or hand full of stars.  It wasn't exactly me, but it  would be great for the person who wants a quick traditional romance where two unlikely characters find love.

Facebook Page!!

The Working Mom's Book Blog now has a Facebook page  I just created it and it seriously kind of sucks right now, but I promise great things!  Between work, Mommy duties and reading the 6 new ARC's I have waiting for me...it will get done and I'll make sure to update when I post new reviews!

The Second Chance Cafe by Alison Kent

The Second Chance Cafe
I've literally started this post about half a dozen times now.  I don't know how else to start it other than saying this book is beautiful.  And, there are brownies...lots and lots of brownies!

The Second Chance Cafe is about Kaylie Flynn, who has recently returned to Hope Springs, the town she spent the majority of her childhood being raised by a foster family.  Her foster parents have both passed away, and she's recently purchased the house they left behind.  Abandoned by her parents and raised in the foster system, Kaylie is the product of a turbulent past and this house represents the happiest years in her childhood.  She has plans to turn the first floor into a cafe, but the house is in desperate need of repairs.  With several recommendations, she hires Tennessee (Ten) Keller, a local contractor, to take over renovations and repairs to make the house business ready. Ten has been living his entire adult life in a constant state of guilt over the arrest, and eventual imprisonment of his older brother, Dakota.  When Ten and Kaylie begin to open up to each other, they soon find themselves stepping over the lines of their professional relationship.

As I said, this book is beautiful.  The story isn't just about Ten and Kaylie, it has depth beyond their love story.  The secondary characters like Luna and Mitch are important, and have stories of their own to share.  Seeing through their perspective makes the story that much stronger.

Did I mention this book has brownies?  Kaylie is a baker and her specialty is brownies.  I don't know how many times I found myself in desperate need of a brownie when reading this book, or chocolate...or brownies covered in chocolate.  The most unique part of this book was that the author actually includes recipes.  When I came across the first one, I literally wanted to rush home to make a batch of brownies.  It was a great touch to the book and very very bad on my diet.  :-)

The love story between Ten and Kaylie builds slowly which was very appropriate to the their characters. Both carried their own set of baggage and to have had them rush would have made it appear fake.  I loved how Ten and Kaylie become acquaintances then move on to friendship before becoming lovers.  My husband is my best friend and I appreciate seeing that deep bond develop in this book.  It's genuine and real and makes the fall that much sweeter.

The Second Chance Cafe is the first book in a new series by Alison Kent, and the next story will feature another character from the book.  I really enjoy this type of series that gives each character (or couple) their own book.  It gives you closure at the end of each story but also gives you the pleasure of coming back to a book world you fell in love with.

This book comes out on March 5th.  It is available for pre-order now and I've included the links below. Don't miss out on this beautiful love story by Alison Kent.

Happy Monday! (Is there such a thing?)

What a crazy crazy weekend!  I literally had time to read two chapters this weekend, which might be a record low for me.
My husband took me out on Saturday for a romantic Valentine's date...a fancy dinner and tickets to the symphony.  He did good, real good and will be getting big brownie points for days to come.
Sunday afternoon I spent with my BFF.  We went to see Safe Haven - the movie adaption of the book by Nicholas Sparks.  I love going to see movies based on books I've read.  It's always fun to compare and contrast between the two and see the characters you love in the flesh.  There are a ton of book-to-movie films coming out in the next year I can't wait to see - Beautiful Creatures (next one on my list), The Host, Mortal Instruments, Catching Fire, Blood Sisters.  It's going to be an exciting year at the movie theater.
I am currently reading The Second Chance Cafe by Alison Kent.  It's publication date is March 5th (just around the corner) and I'm excited to dive in and write up my review!  Until then, Happy President's Day!

Defying the Odds by Kele Moon

Happy Friday! I almost considering doing at happy dance at my desk when it finally hit 5:00 but then I realized that would be extra time spent in the office when I could be hauling ass out the door!

I started reading this book yesterday and as soon as I opened it, I came face to face with a warning and disclaimer.  I'm totally not kidding.  I don't think I've ever seen a warning or a disclaimer on any book, except maybe in jest. So that kind of scared the ever living crap out of me. I mean, I read Fifty Shades which had a lot of kink (hehe, kinky fuckery) but even it didn't come with a warning.  I almost put on the brakes right then out of fear that I was in over my head....but this book was given to me by the publisher and I felt it was my duty to carry on, and I'm glad I did.

Defying the Odds is about a UFC champion, Clay, and a small town waitress, Melody, who is on the run from her abusive ex-husband.  Clay had a rough start in life after his mother abandoned him at the age of 11.  Because of this, he doesn't exactly get along with others, hence his chosen profession.  Clay and Melody seem like an unlikely pair to begin with...someone who beats the shit out of people for a living and a victim of spousal abuse, but it actually worked really well.  I can't see Melody with anyone else - they were perfect for each other.  They complimented each other and showed how two broken people can become whole again after finding each other.

Its a beautiful love story and one I didn't expect after being scared shitless by the warning/disclaimer.  The book didn't require any type of warning in my opinion. I'm still trying to figure out why it was there in the first place.  There is nothing really shocking about the book.  The love scenes were hot, but nothing super kinky that would require a warning.  In fact, I think the love scenes helped prove the underlying theme of mending old wounds.  They both learned to trust again, both physically and emotionally.

One downside I felt the book had was the language.  It was a bit rough around the edges.  Maybe I'm just a snob, but I literally cringed everytime the word "ain't" was uttered.  I understood this was necessary due to the setting, and I actually thought the author did a great job and making it sound authentic, but it just wasn't my thing.

This book is on the short side, but I didn't feel like it was lacking.  It is a quick read, and I appreciated that it didn't lag.  The ending brings it the story of Clay and Melody to a close but still leads nicely into a second book, which will feature another character from the book.

Was it my favorite book?  No, but I still enjoyed it and thought it was a nice read.  What woman wouldn't like a book about a strong man risking everything to protect the woman he loves?

A Taste of Trouble by Gina Gordon

The most amazing thing happened to me yesterday!  I received my first ARC!  Only book nerds like me probably understood that sentence, so I will explain for those less psychotic book fans out there.  ARC's are Advanced Readers Copies sent from publishers.  Before a book comes out, they will send out an unedited ARC to a select number of people for reviews.  Those who receive ARC's have the chance to read the book and post thoughts/reviews in hopes of increasing the hype of the book before it's released.  So, in a nutshell, you get FREE books and you get to review them!  It's seriously like a book nerd's paradise.

So I got my first e-ARC yesterday.  I was deliriously giddy, and I seriously considered taking a picture of the book cover on my computer that said "Unedited Advanced Readers Copy" to proudly display to anyone that cared.

I've never read anything by Gina Gordon, but I will definitely be adding more books by her to my library.  She writes a good romance.  This is the type of book that makes you smile when you read it. It a classic romance and yet I still found myself surprised in certain parts.  I'd hate to call it a "beach read" because I think that title makes the book sound superficial and its not, it's light, witty and fun.  When I decide what to read, I like to switch things up so I don't get bored.  I'll go from a YA book to a classic romance, and then something a bit heavier.  And this would be the perfect book to read after something very emotionally heavy.

This book centers around Liv, a baker who's about to fulfill her life-long dream of going into business for herself, and Jake, a promotional executive who is trying to move up in his company.  Jake is assigned, by his boss, to meet and persuade Liv to join their marking firm.  He knows he's in instant trouble when he first comes into contact with Liv and realizes she's everything he wants in a woman.  Liv, however, is very against the idea of dating and believes her life will be much better off without a man in it long term.

I knew going in that Jake's deception was going to be the climax of the book - that part is obvious.  But Gina throws in some curve balls that I didn't see which kept it interesting.  The book is somewhat predictable at parts, but its a lighthearted read and I wasn't looking for a huge emotional roller coaster in this book.  I enjoyed the simplicity in it and when I finished it, I felt happy.  Also, Gina can write a love scene.  Yum.  After reading a few YA novels in a row, I needed a good love scene...or four.

I thought Gina did a great job at developing the main characters.  I understood each of them and the choices they made.  The secondary characters were great too.  I especially liked Austin and actually wished he was around more.  I'm hoping she turns this book into a series, because I would love to get to know some of the other characters that were close to both Jake and Liv (especially Jake's friends).

When this book comes out, feel free to pick it up and enjoy the beautiful love story that is Jake and Liv! :-)

Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal (Lux Series # 3)
I first want to state that I absolutely positively loathe cliffhangers.  They are like my kryptonite.  If you ask my husband if there is something I lack, he would say patience.  I have none.  When a book ends in a cliffhanger and the next book in the series doesn't come out for at least six months, I seriously want to hurt someone.  So, I usually avoid books with known cliffhangers until the next book is out.  Its for the greater good of those around me, and my sanity.

Alright, now that I have that out of my system, lets review Opal.  This book was by far the sexiest book in the series.  The Katy/ Daemon saga has been resolved and they are now trying to live their happily ever after, amongst crazy hybrids, aliens and evil doctors.  But you know, everyone has their struggles.  Without giving too much away, I would say this book is frustrating in a certain way...you will understand when you read it.  I mean seriously, how many freaking interruptions can two people possibly have?  But Jennifer doesn't play tease throughout the entire book and I felt much better towards the end.  Not the end-end, I'll talk about THAT later.

This book brings back characters that were previously missing, those who have betrayed and also brings together those who have grown apart.  I liked the family dynamic in this book.  Jennifer focuses on many different aspects of family and how Katy realizes that those you care about are worth any sacrifice.  There is also a importance placed on Katy's transformation from a quiet, push-over type teenager to a fierce, would-do-anything-to-protect-my-family young woman.  She grows up in this book, and it is rewarding to see her blossom into something more confident and in control compared to her previous self.  It doesn't mean she is without mistakes.  She still makes a few mistakes in judgement along the way, but that is part of growing up right?  I'm almost 32 and I make mistakes on a daily basis...red velvet cake at 9:00 last night...bad bad mistake.

This book may have been a bit slower than the others.  Much of the book is based around preparing for something so the action sequences are small but still intense.  The slower pace of the book is forgiven due to all the yummy scenes Jennifer includes.  Even though this is a YA book, the scenes are written in a way that makes you want to turn back the page and read it again.  They are still the fade to black type scenes that YA books usually include but the build up is well written.

Around the 98% point, you experience an WTF moment and then a "No, No, NO!" moment.  And then the huge cliffhanger is dropped and the book ends.  This was a total surprise for me.  The first two books didn't necessary come to a complete close but there was a end to them (cliffhanger free).  So when this shit happened, I literally considered sending her and email demanding the next 10 pages (at least) for my sanity.  But its ok, I've had a day to ponder it and I am now at peace with the ending.  See, I can pretend to have patience.  And I guess the wait will make the next book even sweeter.  That's the mom in me talking....the rest of me is still thinking about sending that email.  :-)

Onyx by Jennifer L. Armetrout

So I'm trying to write this after reading Opal - the third book in the series....and my head is still spinning (more about that later), so bare with me.

Opal is the second book in the series, and it continues right where Obsidian ends.  This was kind of a frustrating book for me, because I really expected the whole Daemon/Katy thing to be resolved by the end of Obsidian.   When it didn't and they were still in love/hate with each other, I thought "Oh, come on already"!  Also, Katy makes a lot of unwise (ok, stupid) decisions in this book.  She withholds a lot of information and keeps tons of secrets and when it all comes out, shit hits the fan.  I forgave her for many of these mistakes because she is only 18, but after a while, I really questioned her intelligence.

This book centers around trust...who can trust who and how far that trust will go.  Blake is a more prominent character in this book  and he and Katy spend a lot of time together, which makes Daemon oh so jealous.  I love me some jealous male - yum.  Katy trusts Blake and Daemon doesn't, and this is a major battle line between them.  Katy also has difficulty fully trusting Daemon after his sudden shift in attitude.  He was kind of a jackass to her in much of the first book, and that hurt doesn't simply melt away.  Katy spends much of the book looking inside herself and deciding who she is now and what she wants.

I think if there was an award for the best kissing scenes, it would go to Jennifer.  These are YA novels so you pretty much know going in that the heat level is going to be mild - they are written for teenagers.  But Jennifer is supremely talented at writing kissing scenes that curl your toes.  I mean, yum.  They should figure out a way to mass produce Daemon like men and distribute them all over America.  Single women everywhere would rejoice.

Despite horrible decisions and the frustrating push and pull of the Daemon/Katy saga, I really enjoyed this book. Authors write to bring out emotion and I think any emotion you feel when reading means the author has accomplished something.

Was this book as good as the first?  No, but I think that could be part of it being a series.  In the first, the entire book is one big mystery and you keep reading to unravel all the secrets hidden in the pages.  With a sequel or a series, the story is a continuation and many times the majority of the mystery in the first book have already been solved.  Therefore, it is the characters that keep you coming back for more.  Daemon, Katy and the rest of the Lux series gang are great characters and you want to see what journey the author takes them on...which is why I jumped into the Opal minutes after finishing Onyx.  More to come on that book later. :-)

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This book was a saving grace for me.  I am anal when it comes to reading and I have rules (yes, rules...don't judge).  My husband constantly makes fun of me for all of my strict reading rules, but its my hobby so I can make my own rules if I want to, damnit!

My crazy anal book rules:
1. I always, always finish a book.  Even if it sucks or its not that interesting, I always finish.
2. If I start a series, I read every book in the series in order with nothing else in between and I always finish a series.
3. I do not read multiple books at a time.  I get confused easily. :-)
4. I don't start a series unless it has at least 2-3 books out already.  I seriously have NO patience.  Waiting for books is like baking brownies and sitting there in front of the oven twiddling your thumbs until the timer goes off - agony!

There aren't many but they are my rules and I do follow them...mostly to keep my sanity.

ANYWAY, back to the book review.  Obsidian came to me when I had broken a few of my rules in a row.  The first rule broken was #2 - I stopped reading a series two books in.  I just couldn't do it - book one, fantastic...book two, like nails on a chalkboard!  So that was strike one.  The second rule broken was #1 - I didn't finish a book.  The male character lead was nothing but a total douche.  Never a good sign, so I stopped mid-way through.

Yes, they are my rules and yes, I have the right to break them...but still - I felt like a book failure.  I didn't even finish a book - that I spent money on!  EPIC FAIL.

So, I went online and begin the search for something that would cure my book blues.  I looked through my Good Reads list and nothing stood out, so I went to bn.com and just started searching.  When I stumbled upon "Obsidian", my first thought was "Aliens, really?"  I don't do alien or space books - that's my nerdy husband, not me.  But the reviews on this book were awesome, and I thought "well it can't be that bad, could it?"

So, I forked out the cash and began my journey through an alien book still wondering how an alien could be hot.  Let me tell you, I soon found out.  I'm pretty sure Jennifer Armetrout could make a zombie look hot.  Daemon, um wow.  If all aliens were that hot, we would welcome them all to our planet with a big welcome sign that said "Women of Earth welcome you with open arms! Abductions welcome"

This book is written in first person, from the perspective of Katy, a girl who moves to a small podunk town in West Virginia from Florida.  She soon finds out her next door neighbors are anything but normal.  Dee and her brother Daemon respond to their new neighbor in completely different ways.  Dee welcomes her with open arms, while the very hot Daemon basically tells her to eat shit and die.

I love the way Katy and Daemon's relationship begins - with both of them basically hating the ever loving crap out of each other.  There is no love at first sight or blossoming friendship, only absolute hatred, which makes for some amazing friction.

Secrets surrounding her new neighbors slowly come out and she find out she's not living next to two average teenage twins.  The book is witty and face paced and the story line is solid.  Often with romance novels, I find myself racing through the book just so I can get to the part where the two main charcters finally, well you know.  But Obsideion's story line kept you engaged without racing through it to get some steamy scenes.  Not to say that there isn't some good steam in this book.  Its YA, but the hot scenes are still hot, even if they are written to a YA audience.

Overall, I thought this was one of the better YA series I've came across.  Sometimes YA books tend to be very whiny and well, adolescent, but this was well written and the characters easy to identify with (despite the whole alien thing, obviously).  The only thing I found semi-frustrating was the constant push and pull between Katy and Daemon.  After I while, I was like "OMG, get your shit together and figure this out".  But I think that was the point...you can't go from hatred to love in a few chapters.

So, if you are in the mood for a new YA series, Obsidian his an awesome one to pick up (aliens and all)!

Welcome to my book blog.  Books are my passion, and my escape when I need a few moments (ok, hours...) away from life.  You always know you've found an excellent book when you can't go to sleep unless you know how it ends.  Reviewing books is a new thing to me, mostly because I've always considered what I read to be no one's business but mine.  I read for me.  I've never been one to join a book club so I can discuss how a book made me feel and hear what everyone else thought of the book.  But, the longer I've been reading, the more I find myself following other's book blogs for guidance.  I am strictly an e-reader and the amount of books out there in e-form are staggering.  Sometimes looking for a new book can be overwhelming and a good review can either make or break a book for me.  So, why not create my own book blog so I can help others decide if that new e-book is really worth your hard earned money!
So, welcome....stay tuned for my first book review of Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout!
