Currently Reading...

The Demon Lover
Between finishing up home improvement projects, cleaning my house top to bottom in preparation for my in laws upcoming arrival, writing my first novel...oh and working full time and being a Mommy, I am currently reading The Demon Lover by Juliet Dark.  I received The Water Witch (the second book in the series) from the publisher to review so I am starting with The Demon Lover first.
If you love writers like Deborah Harkness or even Diana Gabaldon, this would be an excellent series for you.  Juliet Dark's writing style is beautiful and elaborate.  She doesn't just tell a story, she creates an entire world as she describes every detail the character sees and feels.  It's like watching a painter create a masterpiece layer by layer - truly breathtaking.  As a writer, I'm a bit envious.  ;-)
I'm only about 10% into the story, so I can't say much for the plot yet since I don't have much to go by, but so far I'm interested and enjoying it.  I'll write up a full review once I'm done...but be patient with this one.  Life is about to get bat-shit crazy in my house!

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire!!

Walking Disaster
I've been waiting for this book since September when I downloaded Beautiful Disaster, and Travis Maddox crashed into my life.  I was so excited and honored to receive an advanced copy of this book from Atria for review.  So let's go!
First off, if you are thinking about doing the normal thing us book crazed people do and re-read Beautiful Disaster, my advise would be - don't.  Walking Disaster is Beautiful Disaster, but from Travis's POV.  So you are robbing yourself of reliving the story all over again by re-reading Beautiful Disaster.  It will be too fresh in your mind, and all those frustrating parts that make you want to scream won't be nearly as scream-worthy if you're already primed and ready for them.
While I will say that I had hoped that Walking Disaster would differ from the original a bit more, and have more new scenes, I can't deny that I didn't absolutely LOVE reading an entire book from Travis's prospective.  Hearing his inner thoughts, seeing his actions and learing the reason behind them made a lot of things click for me.  By not re-reading Beautiful Disaster, I would hit certain parts and remember, "oh right, he does this now" and then get rewarded with the full Travis Maddox version of the event.
I had totally forgotten what a total douche he is in the beginning.  We all fall in love with him at by the end of BD, and kind of forget the womanizing asshat he was.  In Walking Disaster, you get a front row seat to that action.  Part of my was disgusted, and wanting to move on to the non-douchy part of the book, but the other part of me was totally enjoy pre-Abby Travis - he was kind of yummy...in a different way.  But I also think it helped me understand, as a reader, that part of him, and why he was the way he was at that part of his life.
As I've said before Beautiful Disaster is my favorite book.  I've read it a hundred times.  One would think reading the same book from the hero's perspective, rather than the heroine, would be boring, but it wasn't.  Maybe that's partially because I'm a die-hard fan, but I think also it's because Jamie McGuire's a great writer and created such a strong character writers can identify with.  I found myself getting mad and frustrated over scenes I had read and re-read in Beautiful Disaster a dozen times, but reading them again from Travis's POV put a totally different spin on them.  I was angry all over again, even knowing everything would turn out alight in the end.
The journey Travis takes in this book is beautiful and painful.  He constantly second guesses himself and will end up taking one step forward and two steps back.  He plays the part of a untouchable harden man on the outside, but his thoughts are so much the opposite.  One word from Abby can destroy him.  It makes you wonder if you can love someone too much, or if there is no such thing as too much love.
Walking Disaster still had all of my favorite lines, and they are all delivered by Travis...so reading them as he says them and thinks them was thrilling.  The toast at the Valentine's Party, I always knew how agonized he was when he said it, but to hear the thoughts that are running through his head and he delivers the speech, it just makes the words even more painful.  And the most famous line in the entire book "Well I belong to You!" and the events that happen after.  Breathtaking.  It was like putting together the missing pieces of a puzzle.  The entire book was...the missing pieces to a puzzle.
And the best part of the book? The ending.  That's all I'm going to say.  ;-)

(Please Note - Because Walking Disaster has not released and I was provided an advnaced readers copy for this review, I have not included any quotes from the book.  If you would like some teasers, please visit Jamie McGuire's Facebook page.  She's got some good ones!)

Bittersweet Blood by Nina Croft

Bittersweet Blood
One of the many things I love about receiving advanced reader's copy's from publishers is the opportunity to be introduced to new authors.  My reading addiction started many years ago with a little book called Twilight.  You may have heard of it?  No?  Anyway...after reading it, I was hooked on reading, but I wanted something more "adult".  So I hunted down every paranormal romance author I could find.  After  few years, I think I had read literally every known book and series about vampires, witches, fey and every otherworldly creature known to man.  There was a point where I would browse the Barnes and Nobles website, and look at the Nook Book section for Paranormal Romance, and I literally owned all of them.  That was around the time I branched out, and began reading contemporary romance which is my new addiction.  Paranormal is still my first love.  It was why I began reading in the first place, and I am always excited to find new authors in the genre.

When I received Bittersweet Blood - the first book in Nina Croft's new series "The Order", I was super excited.  I haven't started a new paranormal series in a while.  Beginning a series in this genre is like entering a new world.  There must be about a million vampire series out there by now, but none of them are identical, which is why readers keep coming back.  Each author has their own spin, or signature, and seeing the world they've created is always magical.  I always have a serious case of envy for authors who write paranormal because I think it takes a certain type of talent to write fiction in which you create a world outside of our normal existence.  The author is literally creating life on the page.  It isn't just creating a hero and heroine with secondary characters, but also creating an entire world for them to live in.  It's very inspiring.

Nina creates a world which feels familiar to me, but in a way in which I feel like I'm coming home.  She creates characters you can relate to, even though they live in a very complex and different world.  She also adds mystery to the story that is subtle and revealed at just the right times to give the reader the perfect amount of suspense.  At first, I thought this was solely a vampire book, but I quickly realized that Nina had created an entire world filled with demons, fey, werewolves and just about anything else you could think of.

Bittersweet Blood revolves around Tara who has been a recluse her entire life.  Living with her very strict aunt until 22, she was always kept indoors and forbidden from leaving the safety of home.  After her aunts passing, she is now free to leave her home...and wants to go out and create a "normal" life for herself.  Unfortunately for her, normal is about the last thing she finds.  Instead, she finds herself hiring Christian, a private investigator/vampire to look into her past and locate the identity of her parents.  In doing so, they discover Tara is anything by normal and is in serious danger if found.  Now it's Christian's job to protect her.

"All my childhood, I watched from the sidelines, never belonging, never joining in, and I thought that was going to change.  All I ever wanted was to be normal."

Tara discovers there were very specific reasons she was locked away from the world and as she and Christian dive further into her past, she realizes she's the furthest from normal as you can get, and she's not sure a life in hiding is for her.

""I don't want you to have to take care of me.  I'm never going to be normal - I've accepted that, but it doesn't mean I've resigned myself to hiding for the rest of my life.""

I really enjoyed the characters in the book - Christian especially.  One of the reasons I enjoy paranormal novels, vampires especially, is the history.  There are very few instances where an author can create a character, besides a vampire, that can live that long.  Christian is over 500 years old, and has lived and breathed history, but also carries centuries of pain and loss.  With Tara, you see him heal, and become whole, for probably the first time in his entire existence

"I don't know, but don't be afraid to look inside yourself.  I've come to believe there is no such thing as pure evil or pure good, and maybe no such thing as a normal life.

Christian is also some kind of hot.  He's got the whole romance book package down - tortured soul, fierce protective instinct, total badass, sex on a stick.  And I don't know what it is, but when the hero in a book says the word "Mine", it's just jaw dropping.  She drops a couple of those in there.  Good job Nina Croft.

""You can't get out," Christian said softly. Don't bother trying."
She glared at him through narrowed eyes.  "Neither can you."
"Ah, but I don't want to.  I have everything I want right in here."  He sauntered toward her, circling, sniffing the air.  Halting less than a foot from where she stood, he started to unbutton his shirt.  He gave up halfway down, ripped it open and dragged it off his shoulders, throwing it on the floor.  "Sex and food.""
Bittersweet Blood is a fun read, and it's a great start to an exciting series.  I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series and diving deeper into the world Nina has created!

Betsy Taylor Series by MaryJanice Davidson

Undead and Underwater
I recently finished Undead and Underwater - the latest book by MaryJanice Davidson.  I've read literally everything MJ has published and I read every single page, front to cover...the acknowledgements, the thank-yous, everything.  Why?  Because MaryJanice Davidson is the funniest god damn person I've ever read.  Katie MacAlister is a close second, but MJ takes the cake.

The Undead series is by far her best.  Betsy Taylor is a young woman who winds up getting hit by a car and reluctantly becomes the vampire queen of the entire vampire race.  She hates it, and would rather be rushing sales at Macy's and stocking her closet with designer shoes (she lurrrves shoes).  If there was such a thing as a literary soulmate, Betsy would be mine.  Half the things she says and thinks are equal to mine, and the other half are the things I'm thinking in my head and wished I had the balls to say.  Her ongoing inner monologues  are freaking hilarious   I don't even think it would matter if the book had plot.  MJ could title it "Betsy goes to the mall and buys a Slurpee and it would be awesome.

Because the latest book, Undead and Underwater is a collection of novellas (including non-Betsy books), I'm not going to do a full-out review. My reviews tend to be on the long winded side and it could end up being longer than the book itself   Instead, I've compiled a few (ok, more than a few - it was hard to pick!) of my most favorite scenes and quotes from various Betsy Taylor books to try and persuade you to go out and read these books.

“I was so furious I was actually dizzy with it. There were so many bitchy, sarcastic observations to make, I was having a sarcasm stroke. "My God! You people! You're - you're so stupid you're making my eyeballs throb. They're throbbing, dammit!"
--Undead and Unfinished

“I—I adore you, too. Well, I don't know if I adore you. That's not really the word I'd use. But I—I—" I managed to wrench it out. God, this was hard! "I love you."
"Of course you do," he said, totally unsurprised.
"WHAT? I finally tell you my deepest, most personal feelings and you're all, 'Yeah, I already got that memo'? This, this is why you drive me nuts! This is why it's so hard to tell you things! I take it back.”
--Undead and Unappreciated

“Sinclair doesn't love your sister."
"Not yet." I said darkly. "Give him time."
"Look, I'm sure he's interested in her—"
"Wait till you see her. Just wait."
"Like he doesn't have pussy thrown at him from cars?"
"What a horrifying mental image.”
--Undead and Unappreciated

“Zombieland reference," Jon said, nodding.
"How do you know that? That's a thousand-year-old reference!" I looked at Laura.
"I can't think of a single movie from a thousand years ago." "Uh...Betsy..."
"Don't say it." You know how you don't know how stupid something is until you hear yourself say it? That happened to me a lot.”
--Undead and Unfinished

""Let me in! You guys! C'mon, open up! I was burying the stupid cat, I didn't think iI needed my keys!"
A deeply amused, laughed-choked voice drifted from the dog-free side: "What...is...the password?"
"You fucker, open this door!"
"That," the king of vampires replied," "was the last weeks password."
"Sinclair!"
"Also incorrect."
"You shit! You think there won't be a giant payback for this? There will be major giant payback, asshat! Enjoy sleeping on the couch for the next five decades.""
--Undead and Unstable

""You realize you're not in any actual danger, darling."
"Sez you, butt monkey! Open! This! Door! That a royal command, buddy, from your queen. Who is allowed to give royal commands and also allowed to kill you and eat you if you disobey and I don't mean that in a sexy way, either!"
The door opened so quickly I fell into our entryway shrieking all the way down
"Die Die Die D-oh. I'm inside now.""
--Undead and Unstable

""It's like an episode of Three's Company, with the goofy misunderstandings. Plus attempted murder ant the pretty high chance at least one of you will end up shot in the face."
Betsy grimaced and shook her head. "Hate getting shot. Stings like crazy.""

Happy Hump Day!

I saw this on Facebook and couldn't resist posting it.  I mentioned in an earlier post that my husband avoids my blog like the plague.  I think it's because he's scared to death I sit here and do nothing but compare him to literary studs.  So when I saw this, I burst out laughing.  If, my husband actually does ever get the courage to read my blog - you're my forever stud muffin.  ;-)

The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

The Sea of Tranquility: A Novel
Sweet Baby Jesus....I survived.

So, here we go.

I request a lot of ARC's...I mean, free books I get to review?  That's enough to get me all hot and bothered no matter what the book title may be.

Sometimes an ARC's will come to me already published and it has yet to be released.  If its been published, I don't read any reviews.  I want my perspective to be my own, without someone else's views mucking it up.

So I sat down to read The Sea of Tranquility with no idea what it was about, other than the short synopsis that was given by the publisher.  My husband sits down next to me....yes, I know I talk about my husband a lot...mostly because I know it annoys him, because I know he doesn't read my blog.  So I can say things like "Hey, I said a bunch of stuff about you on my blog today." and he will grit his teeth and look all wigged out but he still won't read it.  I think he's scared shitless my blog is nothing but a long list of book characters I'd leave him for.  Personally, it makes me laugh.  Anyway, side track done.  So, he sits down next to me and says "What are you reading now?" and I say "I don't know, some YA ARC called The Sea of Tranquility".  If I only knew the mind fuck I was getting myself into.  The term "Young Adult" will never be the same for me.  The only thing young about this book was the fact that the characters were under the voting age.

The Sea of Tranquility is about Nastya, a girl who was the victim of something no living person should be subjected to, and because of that, she's a completely different person.  Determined to remove herself from everyone and anything she loves, she moves in with her aunt and starts over at a new school.  After two year, Nastya is very good at pushing people away and keeping her distance.  She doesn't switch schools to make new friends or become someone new, she starts a new school to disappear   While walking in the quad at lunch during her first week, she notices a boy sitting on a bench, utterly alone.  Day after day, no one comes near him and she wonders what he did to earn his very own "dead zone" in the school quad.

"There are two more benches I have to pass to get to the doors, and it's the one on the left that catches my attention.  It's empty, save for one boy, sitting right in the middle.  It might not seem strange except for the fact that every other bench in this place - in truth every other place where a person could justifiably put their ass - is filled.  Yet there is no one sitting on that bench  except him.  When I look more closely, there's no one even hanging around in the immediate vicinity.  It's like there's an invisible force field surrounding this space and he's the only one inside it."

Josh is a boy who keeps to himself, but notices everything.  He lost his childhood at a very early age and had to grow up quickly and because of that and everything he lost, his classmates really don't know how to handle him or what to do with him.  He's perfectly fine with the separation forced apon him...he has something in his life he's passionate about, and he's rather be doing that than worrying about anyone else's feelings.  Caring about someone else's feeling means you will miss them when they're gone.

I have to commend Katja's writing for a minute.  There is one huge point in the plot that I completely missed until it's big reveal about thirty pages in.  I mean, I seriously had no clue, even though it was plainly there.  When she dropped that bomb, I had to scroll back through the book going "no way!".  It was brilliant writing.  Very rarely, in book, does much get by me anymore.  I love when that happens.  Being surprised in a book is the ultimate reward.

Usually, in a romance book...boy with baggage meets girl with baggage and they have an instant connection and there you go - Happily Ever After.  Or, boy meets girl and they just can't seem to stay away from each other, no matter how hard they try...and then eventually - HEA.  THe major similarity is that they are drawn to each other from the beginning.  But in the beginning of this book, Nastya and Josh...they couldn't give two shits about each other.  That is the depths of their own baggage and internal they both have become.  It was a frustrating concept for me to get over. There was no instant connection or spark when they meet.  No fireworks or foretelling of things to come.  She notices he lives in his own bubble and he notices she dresses like an "undead whore", and that's about it until she goes for a run late night run and gets lost, and so begins the odd relationship of Josh and Nastya.

I had so many emotional extremes in this book.  Thirty pages in, I was completely flabbergasted, and in awe or to drop one of my kids favorite Mommy-isms "Say Whaaaa???" (my kids that I'm hilarious)  About one-hundred and twenty pages in, I was feeling pretty damn depressed for these two kids...how can they even walk with all that baring down on them? Can I give them a hug? Two hundred pages in, I was smiling like a damn fool and giggling out loud - thank you I needed that.  Around the three hundred and fifty mark, I wanted to throw something, anything...can somebody please give me something to throw?!  By the end of the book, I was calming down and feeling happier/better/relieved, but exhausted.

Please do not think I didn't love this book, because I did.  It was a beautiful love story, and it was probably one of the most real and raw love stories I've ever read which is why I'm feeling so utterly exhausted from it. I seriously did not expect that out of a YA novel.  YA novels are usually safe.  You can fit them into a neat little box and know what and what not to expect.  This book totally shot that theory to hell and it was exhilarating.  Thank God there is an author out there that actually realizes teenagers have feeling beyond PG-13.

There were parts of this book I loved.  The way Josh and Nastya weave their way into each others lives almost by accident is beautiful.  It's almost as if neither of them want it, and hate that they need it, but they do need it, desperately.  Also, for being such serious characters with such sad back stories, they were just so damn cute together.  Cooking in the kitchen and pennies - great moments.  There were also parts of this book I loathed...and hated, and did I mention loathe??  But I respected them.  I may have hated reading some of the mistakes made, but ultimately I understand why they had to happen, even if I still want to throw something.  :-)

I usually like to include a lot of quotes from the book in my reviews.  Personally when I read reviews, quotes are something that can either make or break a book for me.  I am purposely not giving many in this review.  Why?  Because every single one I find will gives away a certain part of the book, and I want the book to be as much as a surprise as it was for me.  You can curse me later.  :-)  But I will leave you one good one as a parting gift.

""I wished my mother was here tonight, which is stupid because it's an impossible wish."  He shrugs and turns to me, drowning the smile that cracks me every time.  "It's not stupid to want to see her again "  "It wasn't so much that I wanted to see her again," he says, looking at me with the depth of more than seventeen years in his eyes.  "I wanted her to see you.""

Wait for You by J. Lynn (Jennifer Armentrout)

Wait for You
Wow, just wow.  I love you Jennifer.  If my husband had just let me stay up one more hour (seriously, who needs to sleep?), I would have finished this book in one sitting - I couldn't put it down.  It was infectious.

I know I always say I love each book I review, but maybe, just maybe, its because I'm awesome and pick really good books and authors?  But seriously, this book was amazing.  Have you ever finished a book and sighed because you felt so contented and happy.  That is how I feel right now, because I literally just finished the book.

Wait for You is about a college freshman named Avery who has moved across the country to start a new life in West Virginia.  She needs a clean break from her past in Texas, and wants nothing more than to never be recognized as her past self.  On her first day of school, she literally runs head first into Cameron Hamilton.

"With the unruly dark waves, the luminous true blue eyes, the face and body to covet, Cam was hands down gorgeous.  I doubted there was a single girl on campus who didn't that that.  But he was more than a swoon-worthy hot guy.  Cam was charming, nice, sweet, and funny.  He was the kind of guy you wanted to bring home and show off - the kind of guy that was never single for too long and the one you fell head over in heels in love with."

Cameron Hutchinson is popular guy, loved by the girls and respected by the guys.  He's the all around package.  For that reason, Avery has no doubts he would never be interested in her.  When he actually begins to show an interest, she thinks its a joke.  Her friends think she's crazy and try desperately to change her mind.

""But we're your friends", Jacob sounded so pitiful that I started to feel bad.  He turned to Cam. "We totally support her going out with you."  Okay, I didn't feel bad for him.  "I like your friends, Avery."  Cam grinned at my arched look.  "Oh, we think she should," Jacob said. "Like she should do it right now." "We also told her you weren't a serial killer," Brit interjected. Cam nodded. "That's a glowing recommendation. Hey at least he's not a serial killer.  I'm going to put that on my Facebook profile."

This book deals with some heavy subject matter.  When I was explaining the book to my husband (late, late last night, while he was trying to sleep, as a punishment  for not letting me finish the book) he did understand why I would want to read it in the first place.  I said "Well the book is about a girl who was <spoiler> and then she <spoiler>", and his response was "wow, that sounds like a real downer of a book, why are you reading it?"  I tried to explain to him that even though the book is based on some emotional heavy material, the book is actually uplifting and humerus (I think he fell asleep in the middle of my explanation/punishment).  The reason the book isn't seriously heavy- the characters.  They are so witty and likable that you can't help but fall in love with them.

Like Cam, I couldn't get enough of Cam.  He was overconfident, bordering on arrogant, but his adorable personality totally made up for it.  He really made the book go from good to excellent for me, and he was the reason for every laugh out loud moment for me.

"Cam chuckled softly.  "You really haven't been listening to me at all.  You've been too busy staring at me."  "I have not!"  My entire face burned with that little fib and I hastily focused on where the couple had been.  They were gone now.  He nudged my shoulder.  "Yes, you were."  I screwed up my face.  "You are so beyond the acceptable level of arrogance "  "Arrogant?  I'm just stating the truth."  Cam tossed his notebook on the ground and leaned back on his elbows, eyeing me thorough his lowered lashes.  That damn, insufferable lopsided grin was on his face.  "There's nothing wrong with staring at me.  I like it."

Did I mention this book is hot?  Its a slow burn, but when the fire starts, it's yummy.  Avery and Cam have great chemistry.  Maybe a quote will help.  :-)

"The hand around my neck held me there, raised up on my elbows as his mouth devoured mine.  And that was the only world I could use as accurately explained how he kissed me.  Cam devoured me."

I've read other books by Jennifer Armentrout...her Onyx series is amazing and actually the reason I started writing reviews, but its a YA series so it's different compared to a book like this.  Not to insult Jennifer's YA series, because she can write one hot YA book (probably the hottest out there), but this was just a bit more grown up.  Obviously the subject material helped out, but the characters were a bit older and there weren't the boundaries that go with a YA book.  This book is categorized as New Adult which something relatively new.  I guess it's right in between Adult and YA...so basically young adults who can swear, drink and have sex, lol.  I like this category  it feels real to me.  It's also where many of my favorite books tend to come from - Beautiful Disaster, Easy, Hopeless etc.  It's like an updated version of YA, without the restrictions.

Wait for You is well worth the read, and I have a feeling, based on the last chapter, that there may be a book or two in the future based on other characters in the book.  So I will say my book prayers and hope for that!

Reckless by S.C. Stephens

Reckless
Holy Shit.  Best Damn Book Ever.  Yep, that about sums it up.

This series has been a love/hate relationship for me.  I think I've mentioned before, but I seriously hated Thoughtless (the first book in the series) when I first read it.  I actually considered not finishing it.  Romance books, by definition, are emotional.  But I don't think I'd ever experienced a book quite like Thoughtless.  I knew it involved a love triangle, and I had read reviews so I understood there was cheating involved.  I guess I just didn't realize the extent to which the hurt and suffering went.  Thoughtless tore me to shreds and then slowly stitched me back up.  I remember telling my husband "This is the stupidest, most goddamn frustrating book EVER!" and then he asked "So, why are you still reading it?" and the answer was because I couldn't put it down.  Even though I wanted to delete the book from my e-reader and never think about it again, I couldn't.  I was completely hooked.  I had to know Kellan and Kiera would make it.  And, omg....I'm so glad I stayed.  The ride, though completely insane and a total mind fuck, was so worth it.  Reckless was the perfect, perfect ending to this series.  Seriously, S.C. Stephens outdid herself with this one.  I was glued to every page and didn't want it to end.

When your relationship begins from a place of lies and deceit, I think trust would be hard to develop. For me, Effortless was the book in which they developed that trust their relationship was missing.  They both were terrified of cheating, and realized that in the end, they could only rely on each other.  In Reckless, I felt like that trust was completely solid and when tested, it holds up over and over.  I also saw Reckless focusing on the two of them growing stronger as a couple and learning to face whatever life threw at them.  I think without everything the went through together, they wouldn't have been able to make it through the the next phase of their relationship as Kellan's fame grew.

"Our relationship hadn't always been the most honest one.  But we'd sworn that we were going to hold nothing back from each other anymore, and I trusted him."

As I've said before, I have a thing for redeemable men in books.  Kellan Kyle is one of my favorites.  I think its because he's transformation is so extreme, but yet it isn't.  In Thoughtless, he does appear to be a total womanizer, and granted, he is.  But there's a deeply emotional reason for it.  He's searching for something, and when it finds it, he completely changes his ways, but his personality remains the same.  Reckless shows Kellan's completed transformation, and I seriously wanted to highlight half the book and give it to my husband as a guide for romantic gestures.  S.C Stephens - you write one seriously hot man.

"Maybe seeing my nerves on my face, Kellan discreetly handed me something.  It was a pale pink rose petal. My mind instantly rewound to the red and white petal-strewn bed he'd laid out for me.  As I stroked the silky petal, I smiled at the words written with a fine-tipped Sharpie.  Wwll, not words exactly.  Very carefully  he'd drawn a picture of an eye, the symbol for a heart, and a drawing of an animal that I could only assume was a female sheep - I love you."

One character I absolutely feel in love with in this last book was Griffin.  I've always liked Griffin,, how can you not?  He's hilarious  He has absolutely no filter and seriously says whatever comes to mind.  He's also the biggest horn dog known to man.  He has so many one-liners in this book that made me laugh out loud.  I loved seeing Griffin become a father...it was very sweet.  But I loved that he still remained classic Griffin, just maybe an upgraded Griffin - Griffin 2.0.

""Please, you guys aren't married."  He crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Kellan.  "No bachelor party, no marriage.  That's the law."  I matched Griffin's posture.  "That is not a law, Griffin."  He swung his head around and looked at me.  "Well it should be.  No T and A, no ball and chain."

The ending to this book.....sigh.  The ending is just gorgeous and brings the whole series to an amazing end.  I felt closure but I knew their journey wasn't over.  There were so many scenes that stole my heart.  I'm not going to list them, but I'll just say my favorite involves a secret Kiera tells Kellan at a very important moment.  Wow,omg and wow again.  You'll know it when you get there...it made me cry, it was so beautiful.  The whole book was beautiful.  Seriously, I really should have just stopped after the first line because it really was the best damn book ever.

"Passion, friendship, love, loyalty, trust...if you found the right person...you really could have it all."

Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian

Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed Series #11)
Lara Adrian - you totally rock.

The Midnight Breed series is one of my favorite paranormal romance series.  It's like a tamer version of the Blackdagger Brotherhood series.  I use the word tame loosely, these books are still seriously hot...they just don't go to the ah, extreme (yeah that's a good word), that Blackdagger tends to do.

Edge of Dawn is the 11th book in the Midnight Breed series.  After that many books, I was starting to wonder how in the world Lara was going to keep this series going.  She had basically mated every male around and was running out of characters.  Being the brilliant author she is, she solved the problem by jumping ahead 20 years and introducing an entire new cast!  Many of the new characters are the result of past matings/books, and some are the childhood characters we already knew and loved.

Mira one of those children who was present throughout many previous books, having been rescued by the Order and taken under their protection.  She is now one of the only female warriors in the Order.  Having suffered a great loss eight years ago when her best friend and lover, Kellan Archer, died at the hands of human rebels, she's been numb, angry and unable follow orders well.  Because of that, she is pulled off active duty and given the task of escorting a very prominent scientist to a gala where he will be honored for his research.  When her "babysitting mission" goes wrong, she finds herself face to face with a man she'd thought she never see again.

""You died," she finally managed to crock.  "I was there.  Eight years ago, almost to the day, Kellan.  I watched you run into that warehouse, I saw it explode.  I still have shrapnel scares from the debris that fell out of the sky that night.  I can still taste the smoke and ask from the fire.""

Having suffered the ultimate loss as a young teen, Kellan's only source of friendship was an annoying little girl who wouldn't give up on him.  As they grew, so did his feelings and and he found himself wanting a future he was afraid to take.  So instead, he runs, telling himself he is protecting those he loves most.

Why, Kellan?  The truth this time.  Something happened the morning we were together.  Something bad enough to make you think I'd be happier believing you were dead in that explosion."

This book had a hopeless urgency to it.  Every moment they have together feels stolen and possibly their last.  Mira is willing to give up anything and everything for the love she feels for Kellan but he wants a better life for her and thinks anything less will be an injustice.  Even though he is the outlaw in the book, Kellan is constantly striving to be the man of honor he once was.  In contrast, as Mira falls deeper and deeper, her warrior self is willing to break every rule to keep him by her side.  I loved this constant push and pull struggle between Mira and Kellan.  It made their relationship seem doomed and desperate, and yet you can't help but want to see them pull through and find a way.

""If you don't love me," she said, "if you truly want me gone...then let go."  He didn't.  His fingers stayed clamped around her hands, going tighter despite every sane and logical cell in his body tell him - no, demanding him - to release her now and walk away.  "Fucking hell, Mouse" he hissed, low and lethal.  Then, without a second's warning, he brought his head down to her and took her mouth."

Seriously, if that quote didn't get you, I really don't know what else to say, lol.

I felt like this new set of recruits/characters in the Breed world brought new life to the series.  I loved the older characters, and still enjoy their presence in the series, but now I feel like there is a world of possibilities - new characters, new love interests, new enemies...the list goes on.  My love for this series doubled with this book - great job Lara!  Can't wait for book twelve...I have a feeling it might center around a certain ex-assassin named Nathan?!

Abbi Gline's Bonus Chapter is Up!

Abbi Glines

The Bonus Chapter of Never Too Far that was promised to us by Abbi when she reached #1 is out, and wow...that was fast!  Not the I am even remotely complaining.  In fact, if Abbi wants to publish a chapter about Rush and Blaire every week for the next oh, forever...that's perfectly ok with me.
The chapter is short, but awesome and in true Abbi fashion, it's a total tease!  But, even though she teases us so, I just can't get enough of Rush and Blaire!
